Having played portions of both, I have found that Minecraft is similar to an 8-bit game and Gary's Mod is similar to a supercomputer physics machine.

It depends on which style you like best.

Garry's Mod is kind of like Buildism, but 3D. If you want to play something completely different, play Minecraft.
