The difference between the 2012 end of the world theory and the one that was a few days ago was that 2012 was predicted by a quite fine number of notable and intelligent people for there time for many hundreds of years.

They didn't predict a darn thing -- their listed calendar ended then.
You have to remember that all great native Central and Southern American civilizations were utterly destroyed by the Spaniards in the 1500s. 2012 is a long time after 1500. They just decided not to write that far ahead.
