I think .999... is a limit.

In a constant function where x = y and a = 1, applying the limit of a constant theory.

Another easy way to prove it:

1/9 = 0.1...
2/9 = 0.2...
3/9 = 0.3...
etc.

So 9/9 = 0.9...

But 9/9 must also equal 1, so 0.9... = 1
