so why are ubuntu and linux considered both the same thing if they have two different names

Comparing Ubuntu and Linux is like comparing a Ferrari with a car. A Ferrari IS a car, but just a specific type of car. Just like how Ubuntu IS Linux, but just a certain distro of Linux.

And Ubuntu is Linux Based. Linux is a collection of Operating Systems. Linux based OSes are Unix based, which Mac is also Unix Based, believe it or not.
