Fireworks are projectile explosion, like a fuse bomb.

Fireworks are a controlled explosion. The bottom of the firework burns steadily, thrusting downward, putting all the explosive power downward, pushing it upward until the main charge goes off. The same basic effect is used with liquid-fuel rockets like the Shuttle.
