If you read that page, it says that the last time that that had happened before in IndyCar was 2006. That's 2011 and 2006 someone's been killed. Quickly reading through some Wikipedia, there was also one in 2004. The last three times someone has been killed in a NASCAR stock car were 2001 (Dale Earnhardt), 2000 (Kenny Irwin Jr.), and 2000 (Adam Petty).

Pretty much. Not only do they go slower, but they have more protection to the driver -- a full roll cage, the HANS neck-restraint device.
