Now before you all get mad at me for suggesting currency and *GASP* hats! please listen.
Buildism is DEAD it's DEAD AND IT WILL STAY DEAD.
The best way to revive buildism is to give more reason to actually build games.
Right now there isn't much reason to build a game on buildism... sure it's fun but you don't get anything........
A simple fix to that would be to have contests but what would the award be without currency? A yellow name? A nifty badge that has no use? Maybe even your game on the front page but you can already get it on their by updating it constantly...
What if we add currency? Then people start working on games so they can earn money and buy that new hat or item! A majority of people enjoy the idea of currency, it makes the game less boring.
Now before any of you with a hatred of currency and hats just open your damn eyes and realize that it is a good idea.

Currency is something that would be very good to have as long as it didn't completely and utterly redefine Buildism as we know it into a capitalism-focused game, even only as far as it did Roblox.
As Jacob_ has explained before, hats aren't inherently wrong, but they have some logistical problems. The site is designed around the current character, and dozens and dozens of templates would have to be redone to make space for hats. And of course, there's the dimwits who take one look at a long list of hats and say "This looks just like Roblox! TOO MANY STUPID HATS RAWR"
Tools, on the other hand, would be a better idea. They actually do stuff and you wouldn't have to redesign the entire site to make room for them.
Extra games -- as long as they are moderately priced and not very expensive or very cheap, this should DEFINITELY be considered.
And since we have Google ads anyway, currency would be good to buy space for ads for your skins, games, or clans (and models, if Jacob_ adds the much-wanted model database into the site). I know, Roblox did this first, but it's a good idea.
