I think (this may not be true) it contains viruses.

I have had it for about 8 months now and though I pretty much don't use it and it's true I don't like it a whole lot, I've never gotten a virus while or recently after using it.

Xfire = Free, no viruses, but overall slower/uglier
Steam = You have to buy 1 game on Steam to unlock the social part, no viruses, good interface

Some Steam games go as low as 5 USD, but you could always find a crack/hack to get around buying a game.

You can always get TF2 on Steam, which is free, and buy something through the game. Stuff can cost as low as 25 cents.

Getting free games doesn't count.

If you spend money in the store, you have a premium account, which is the same as buying the game before it was free. http://www.tf2.com/freetoplay/faq.php
