You need some kind of program that supports transparency -- I use GIMP, personally, but paint.net and Photoshop also work.

Also, try making the background pink (#FF00FF hex, 255,0,255 rgb) where it should be transparent, and the website will do it for you. I was going to make this the template for people who only had Paint but I haven't yet.

Ahh, that explains why there are about 3 transparent pixels in my rainbow swirl background
