Java only supports .aif, .wav and .au. You can use external libraries to play other formats, but Minecraft does this, and I can't play with sound on because it makes the game crash (this affects some other computers too.)
Also, .wav isn't good for music--try AIFF. If you have iTunes, you can use it to convert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIReAopTmAA
