SCIENCE! answer: Because the molecules in the air (mostly water vapor, I believe) scatter the other wavelengths in light, and only the blue reaches us so many miles below. The sky is blue, but not the air around us, between rooms, for example, for the same reason that the ocean looks blue, but a glass of water is clear. The sky is just so much BIGGER. The effect isn't enough to see on smaller scales.

WHEEEE! answer: Because if it were red it would always feel like we're under lockdown, and if it were green we'd always look like Martians.
