Tip on merging is to go to the main thread and put the URL of the thread you want to merge into it. If you need to remove comments that is manually possible within the main thread [after it is merged].
One of the confusing things is that you have to go to the main thread to merge it rather than in the "improper" thread. Otherwise it gets mixed up.
