Did you use some of those lua teaching scripts various people have made, or just examine models and pick it up?

Just models that I knew worked. Especially the common regen button and an explode-reset tool.

I started learning about the really basic stuff such as string manipulation through free models and then i was pointed to the beginners guide

Let's see... I started editing scripts in February... I started making my very first completely new scripts in April... And by November I was a pretty good scripter. Since then I've become almost an expert -- not quite, but nearly. There's still plenty of complex math and ray stuff I don't get.
