And the weird thing is, crashes like that, people usually walk away from.
This?
Walked across the finish line.
This?
Got out, and then did it again next year.
This?

Exactly.
To be fair, though, that wreck started all the safety changes in NASCAR -- until Dale Sr. was killed, NASCAR was very backwards in car and track safety. Many didn't wear firesuits, the seat belts weren't that different from the ones in a typical SUV, and often they either didn't wear helmets or wore ones less protective than most motorcylcists'.

About 20 hours now.

Was this because he tried to cut through someone? Went airbourne and his roof bounced of the trach and landed on the track, busted wide open?

Nope, it might look like that from Googling it but that's because the track workers cut off the roof to get him out. The car didn't run into anything after the pic I showed a few posts ago. Watching the video, and reading through the comments on NASCAR.COM, it seems that he didn't get on the brakes for whatever reason as he headed straight for the wall -- the 15 car was right there with him as they started crashing but hit the wall about a quarter-second later.
No flip, no airborne, just a hard nose-first smash into the wall.
Anyway, Sprint Cup race should be starting right about now! So I'm gonna get off the computer and go watch it.
