Couldn't they just lock the wheels in one direction? That's basically all they do anyway.
Why do they even put steering wheels on nascar cars?

Then how will they go to pit stops
There are several car failures that every NASCAR driver hates to have happen in any race.
1 ) Brakes fail; always a problem on small tracks 2 ) Blow a tire; this can rip apart the sheet metal, sheet glass, and everything else in a 2-foot radius, like Denny Hamlin's car today 3 ) Throttle sticks; this usually results in a hard head-on collision and was responsible for the deaths of Kenny Irwin Jr. and Adam Petty 10 years ago 4 ) Engine blows; no matter what the reason it happens it kills the car 5 ) Run out of fuel; many races have been lost by this 6 ) The steering wheel sticks in one direction; see #3.
