What I'm suggesting is a button on the side of a character part or background that makes an image of the default skin appear behind or in front of it, so that we can see how it looks on a character.
With a slight bit more complexity, maybe it could have a box where you enter a user ID, and it shows that user's skin instead of Jeff, a sort of "try before you buy" feature.

Instead of the jeff skin it should just display the item over the current users Skin.

That's why I suggested the user ID input box idea.
Of course, it's a bit trickier to do with backgrounds if the user already has a background equipped.
