I have been known to try nearly-impossible projects just for the fun of it... Buildism was going to be 3D originally.

I'm seriously considering trying to remake that now...

But you'll need to do some serious hax in order to make it not lag.

If you make it randomly generated worlds like Notch did, it won't lag as much.

Still, rendering all the detail and stuff requires so much CPU and RAM, things that Java makes difficult to use efficiently and in large quantities.
