The future of Buildism |

Hello,
We are all sad to know that Jacob_ can't work on Buildism anymore, and that the site will be closed sooner or later. This, however, is almost unavoidable; we should stop trying to change his mind because we all know he took the right decision after all. Since he's going to college, he won't have time for Buildism, so instead of abandoning it and the closed-source game, he decided to open-source it so that someone else may be able to continue it later.
For Jacob_, I have the following idea:
I would like, with your permission of course, to create a public repository of the game code and allow for users to submit patches, as well as pick a team to maintain it. I would also advise to put a license, so that people don't steal the code. This is a way for people to contribute to the game and make it better and better.
Please tell me what you think about it.

ParticleSystem |

I was wondering how do you enable a particle system? Is it something like:
ParticleSystem = enabled
to turn it on?
And in a weapon would it work like this:
if part.Parent:isA("NPC") or part.Parent:isA("Character") then
Tool.ParticleSystem = enabled
(and how would you turn it off after this? Just reverse it?)
(Please not the above script lines are from the original sword script)
Thanks you for your time.

There have been ups and downs, and there have been times when I've had to just walk away for a while, but Buildism's been nearly my whole life the past 6 months.
When I joined in February, I took a look around, shrugged, clicked the editor, messed around a bit, and decided it couldn't hurt to stay a bit. I checked out the Wiki and found that it was under a spam attack by bots. Helping to clean it up, me and InternetGuy were made wiki mods 2 days after I joined.
In March, I invited a friend of mine to the game. For weeks, it was my only contact with her... even while my Internet was out and I had to scrounge off of the neighbor's Wifi...until I moved, and she never came on anymore. I'm still disappointed about not even getting to say bye, but I moved on from that and got back in the game.
In April, after I became a moderator and the raid happened, I stayed active, got my Internet back full force, and worked on some games, like Buildismaran.
In May, I found some music software and got into that a bit, but I was still full force moderating here.
In June and July, there was the Kieron issues. I think I am one of the few mods from that period who was able to keep on semi-good terms with him.
August... I started making Asteroid Dodgers, and there was the CoderRyne argument. Yes, that went out of hand, because I didn't follow my better judgement and try to dissuade everyone from resigning. The suggestions to Ashely I fully approve, but I think Coder went a little bit too quick in making a final decision there and we all blindy followed without considering. I'm still 100% loyal to Buildism though.
Jacob_, Buildism has been my life for the past 5 months. Since I moved in April, I have had almost no contact with anyone my age in real life, and more than half the time I've spent online has been on Buildism. The game has very much potential, and I haven't been able to finish any of my games due to personal issues and personality issues. I have to do everything, do it myself, and do it the best -- it's just who I am, I can't help myself.
But please Jacob_. Don't just let all these memories die. I've lost too many friends in the past... don't let me lose all the Buildists too.

Some News (good and bad) |

As you probably have heard, I started college last week. The college I'm going to has a reputation for being extremely hard, so I'm not going to have as much time to work on Buildism. Because of this, I'm going to have to close the site in the near future. (If this sentence shocked you, go read the good news below before replying!)
Reasons why I am doing this: - In addition to lack of time, the game is also a lot more complicated than it was 10 months ago. It hasn't reached critical mass yet, but adding a major new feature always introduces a bug or two, and sometimes they don't show up until later.
- I don't hate anyone here, but the community did end up being a lot more high-maintenance than I had planned. After studying biology for 3 hours I don't want to have to break up a fight on a forum.
- The game is actually fairly close to being finished (except for multiplayer), but user-created games are still not what I was hoping for, and although quality was improving during the spring and early summer it seems to have flatlined in the last month or two.
Now for the good news...
I don't think it would be fair to leave everyone with a bunch of game files that they worked hard on and can't open anymore, so I'm going to make the code to the game and website open source. This means that anyone that knows how to program can make their own version of Buildism, then add or change whatever they want to.
I'll post the code as soon as I get it ready! Hopefully it will find its way to someone who's willing to continue the site.
I'm currently working on another game that isn't anything at all like Buildism (not even in the same language). I have been creating websites for 5 years now and it seriously feels weird if I don't have a website online, so I'll wait until there is a playable version of that game before closing Buildism for good.

If you didn't get picked, it's not necessarily because I don't like you or you did something wrong - I wanted to end the problem of having too many staff members online at the the same time, so I just picked the 7 best members out of everyone that applied.
